READING Psalm 51

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, and is a day set aside to reflect on our sin and to lament how it separates us from God. Though we celebrate our reconciliation to God at the end of Lent, Ash Wednesday is a reminder that sin is a reality and without the sacrifice of Jesus, our connection to God is broken. Psalm 51 is a bold recognition of our sin and a prayer to God to cleanse us and draw us ever nearer to Him. As we start a journey from chaos to order this Lent, may we pray along with David to be restored to joy and to be upheld by a willing spirit.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psalm 51:10-12)
