READING Luke 1:26-38

This moment had been hundreds of years in the making. Mary knew the histories - she knew the prophecies. She knew God’s promise and covenant with her people. Yet, in the moment the angel appeared into the midst of her humble, everyday life, she had a choice. She could have said, “No, this isn’t how this is supposed to go.” And God would have been able to achieve His purposes even still. But instead, Mary committed herself to the plan of a God who had committed everything to her and her people – and her act of obedience was the fulfillment of years of prophecy. The moment Mary spoke the fateful words, “Let it be to me as you have said,” the whole world changed forever.

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
