READING Exodus 20:1-20

Something within us balks against “the rules,” doesn’t it? It’d be easy to read the Ten Commandments and think God was putting stipulations on his covenant with Israel – telling them that if they didn’t toe the line, the promise would be null and void.  But that’s not what’s happening. Instead, God is graciously providing a set of guidelines that He knows will help best order the lives of His people. The Ten Commandments are a gift to the Israelites to help them provide a framework for a life lived well and fully – a life that is truly life.

And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.
